Binford-Bell Studio - Black Lake, NM

Too Close to the Sun

I think it is probably the dream of every artist to have a studio dedicated to just their art. We so often work in corners of the house used primarily for something else. I painted in my sewing room. There was never enough light or space. Or storage.

I began dreaming about building a studio to my design over a decade ago when I first moved to Black Lake. The plans were first drawn on napkins for only a 10' x 15' "greenhouse" addition to my house. The scope of the studio project shifted when I first attended a meeting with the director of the State of New Mexico Arts Council where she talked about the art studio tours on the Blue Ridge Mountains.

River of Illusions

My studio project grew to 16' x 21' with a separate entrance and space to "entertain" visitors as well as create. There were times during the construction phase I almost gave up on my dream. I virtually did all the interior finish work myself. The interior walls are painted to best show off my bright visionary paintings. The development of the 3 T's art trail makes my dream now complete and worth all the construction hassles. I can stay home in my studio and welcome potential collectors and workshop students to my biggest creation: My Studio.
